SHAH ALAM, Sept 15 — The upgrade of footpaths to the Bandar Baru Klang LRT3 station is expected to start next month, said state executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han, after a walking audit in the area revealed safety and accessibility concerns.
He said the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) indicated that both urgent repairs and additional improvements are targeted for completion by November.
“Among issues identified were the need for an accessible path for people with disabilities (OKU) leading to the KPJ access road, the widening of narrow walkways, and the relocation of utility boxes that obstruct pedestrian movement.
“Plus, uneven walkway surfaces require repairing, and traffic light timings will be re-evaluated to allow sufficient time for the disabled and elderly to cross safely,” he said in a Facebook post.
Ng added that he personally inspected the area alongside representatives from MBDK and Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, as well as contractors, consultants, and commuters following complaints from the public.
“If people still have to squeeze through crowds, dodge obstacles, navigate damaged paths, or risk dangerous crossings after alighting from the LRT, then the journey is not yet truly people friendly,” he said.
Ng also said his office proposed a pathway through the wall near nearby apartments, as some residents are climbing over it to cross the road, but MBDK informed him that opening would go against road safety standards, with utility lines also embedded in the structure.
“If an official pathway cannot be built, we must find other ways to prevent residents from taking such risky routes.
“I have proposed installing barriers at the location to prevent people from climbing the wall as a shortcut,” he said.
Ng stressed that pedestrian safety must be prioritised to ensure public transport facilities are supported by safe, convenient access networks.
