Malaysia Day preparations going well, internet coverage optimal — Fahmi

KUCHING, Sept 14 — Preparations for the Malaysia Day celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) are going smoothly, including the provision of internet facilities for media practitioners, said Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.

“Attention was given, among others, to the provision of items to be distributed to visitors on the night of the celebration, in addition to ministry-related items that will given out at several locations, including at the (Kuching) waterfront,” he told reporters after inspecting the final minute preparations and full dress rehearsal for Malaysia Day at BCKK tonight.

Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah and Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.

Fahmi added that internet coverage at BCKK is optimum and will ensure media practitioners can perform their duties throughout the celebrations.

“I have spoken to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ensure our media friends have sufficient access to the internet, whether via Wi-Fi or mobile networks, to carry out their duties,” he said.

He said MCMC informed him that telcos have installed all equipment and hardware needed.

"Yesterday, Communications Ministry secretary-general (Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah) informed us about issues involving the audio system, so we will examine this more closely to ensure we have a good show ahead of September 16,” he said.

About 5,000 people are expected to gather at BCKK on Wednesday for Malaysia Day, which will be graced by Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

The official event, which will begin at 8.15pm, will also be attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
