KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 — The government has announced a one-off RM500 special assistance for domestic flight ticket purchases for every eligible new student of public higher education institutions (IPTA) for the September or October intake this year.
"The intake for public universities, polytechnics and community colleges is in September and October.
“This will benefit 7,095 students who need to fly between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territory of Labuan to begin their studies," said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He announced the aid during the national-level Malaysia Day 2026 celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching last night.
He said this is part of the federal government's commitment to easing the people's burden, alongside announcements on improvements to the BUDI Madani Diesel initiative and restructuring of special grant entitlements for Sarawak.
Earlier, Anwar announced an increase in Sarawak's interim special grant to RM1.5 billion, up from RM600 million previously, effective this year.
He said the government will continue negotiations with the Sabah and Sarawak state governments to finalise a sustainable formula for determining the annual Special Grant rate.
"Previously, I announced an increase from RM600 million to RM1.5 billion for Sabah.
"In the spirit of solidarity, friendship and the spirit of Malaysia, tonight I announce RM1.5 billion for Sarawak as well; this is the result of friendship and good negotiations.”
The Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sarawak, Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, was the guest of honour at the celebration.
Also present were Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
Commenting on issues arising within the Malaysian federation, Anwar said there is no problem that could not be resolved and settled.
"I am grateful that through this spirit (of the Malaysian federation), we have been able to implement various projects and programmes for the benefit of the people.”
Meanwhile, Anwar said he wants national oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) to work together as a team to develop the nation.
He explained that to reach a consensus, both parties must respect and recognise rights and laws at both the state and federal levels.
