SHAH ALAM, Sept 16 – A deeper understanding of Malaysia’s history can help Malaysians appreciate the Rukun Negara and strengthen unity in the country’s multiracial society.
Universiti Teknologi MARA Assistant Vice-Chancellor (National Empowerment) Professor Dr Amer Shakir Zainol said Malaysians need to appreciate the history behind the formation of the Rukun Negara and its significance in building a harmonious nation.
“History plays a vital role; if we do not view history as a factor for consideration, I fear we might make decisions based solely on emotion.
“It is important for us to understand the history behind the emergence of the Rukun Negara and why unity is so essential,” he said during the *Bicara Semasa* programme produced by Media Selangor recently.
Dr Amer said that internalising the Rukun Negara should not stop at mere memorisation or recitation during official ceremonies; instead, it must be translated into actual interactions within the community.
He elaborated that citizens should seek common ground rather than magnifying differences that could drive a wedge between races.
“A nation cannot achieve perfect balance if prejudice, preconceived perceptions, and opportunities to spread slander still exist.
“If we continue to emphasize differences over commonalities... in my view, we should seek common ground and narrow the gap of our differences,” he said.
He added that Malaysia’s cultural diversity should serve as an opportunity for the community to get to know and understand one another, thereby fostering a sense of mutual consideration.
At the same time, Dr. Amer stressed that unity is one of the primary aspirations of the Rukun Negara and must serve as the foundation for nation-building efforts.
“No matter how we develop the country, without unity, the nation cannot achieve the aspirations of the Rukun Negara,” he said.
In conjunction with Malaysia Day today, he expressed hope that the people would continue to understand, integrate, and practice the principles of the Rukun Negara in their daily lives.
“My only hope is that we collectively internalise, understand, and put into practice the tenets contained within the Rukun Negara,” he said.
