Para SUKMA: Selangor confident of 60-gold target despite haze-hit events

SHAH ALAM, Sept 8 — Selangor still has a chance of achieving its target of 60 gold medals at the Malaysian Para Games (Para SUKMA) 2026, even though several events had to be postponed due to haze conditions.

As of 11am this morning, the host contingent had collected 25 gold medals, with swimming and athletics emerging as the biggest contributors.

Selangor still trails Sabah in the overall gold medal standings.

State executive councillor youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said Selangor still has two and a half days left to close the gap and achieve its target before the games conclude on Thursday.

He said the postponement of several events had slightly affected the contingent’s momentum, but expressed confidence that Selangor athletes would be able to bounce back and continue competing in the remaining period.

"The postponement of several events has caused the medal target to fall somewhat short but we are on the right track. When events are postponed, it affects the performance and motivation of athletes," he told reporters today.

Najwan hopes that Selangor athletes will remain focused and give their best in the remaining events to help the contingent chase the top position and realise their dream of becoming the overall champions for the first time.

In a related development, he said that no events have been cancelled so far due to the haze, and that postponed events will be carried out in stages.

She said the secretariat is currently reorganising the competition schedule to allow athletes to continue competing without affecting the smooth running of the Games.

"All 10 sports being contested are still going on, but there may be changes in terms of the time schedule. For now, the situation is still under control and we are getting updates from the Health Department and Environment Department every day.

"This is to ensure that each event can take place properly and that the haze does not affect the health of the athletes. What is important is the health of all those involved.”

Para SUKMA, which has been taking place since September 5, features 369 events involving 10 types of sports, namely swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis, tenpin bowling, field bowling, archery, chess, boccia and powerlifting.

The Selangor contingent is led by Lim Yi Wei with a target of 60 gold medals, in addition to chasing the overall champion title in this edition.
