SHAH ALAM, Sept 4 — Police have confirmed that a 62-year-old Selangor man has been detained at Chennai International Airport after Indian authorities discovered 3.42kg of hydroponic cannabis hidden in his luggage.
According to The Star, Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed the arrest, saying Malaysian police had been informed of the incident by India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
He said the suspect flew from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 to Chennai International Airport on an AirAsia flight on August 31.
“Chennai Customs officers inspected the suspect’s luggage and found 3.42kg of hydroponic cannabis concealed in a secret compartment,” he told The Star today.
Hussein said the suspect is currently being detained by Chennai Customs and will be investigated under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985.
“We will remain in contact with the Indian authorities to obtain further information on the case,” he added.
The incident is the latest in a series of arrests involving Malaysians suspected of smuggling hydroponic cannabis into Chennai.
On August 8, a 54-year-old man from Perak was reportedly arrested in Chennai on suspicion of smuggling 4.03kg of hydroponic cannabis after arriving from Bangkok.
The arrest was confirmed by Indian Customs officials, while Malaysian police said the cannabis was believed to have been sourced from Thailand.
