KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today expressed concern and sadness over the flash floods that struck Rasuwa district in Nepal, saying the government was actively working to locate 54 Malaysians who remained uncontactable.
He said the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu was working closely with Nepalese authorities and relevant agencies.
Anwar added that officers from the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, were also being mobilised to strengthen coordination efforts on the ground.
“I was deeply concerned when informed by the Foreign Ministry that 54 Malaysians remain uncontactable so far, and efforts to locate them and obtain updates on their condition are being actively pursued,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Anwar said the Madani government, through the Foreign Ministry, would continue to closely monitor developments and mobilise all necessary efforts to ensure the safety and welfare of affected Malaysians remained a priority.
“I urge all Malaysians to pray together that all of them will be found safe soon and that all search-and-rescue efforts will be facilitated. God-willing,” he said.
According to media reports, the flash floods that struck the Nepal-Tibet border area yesterday were caused by heavy rainfall and glacial landslides along the Bhote Koshi River.
The disaster disrupted communication networks and cut off the main road linking the affected area to the capital, Kathmandu, hampering communication and the movement of people in and out of the area.
