KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — The Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (JKDNKA) is strengthening intelligence operations along the Kelantan border area to detect any movements or elements from southern Thailand that could pose a security threat.
Its director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the measures included increasing the number of intelligence personnel from the General Operations Force (GOF), in addition to strengthening manpower and assets in border areas identified as high-risk.
“We have our own intelligence personnel from the GOF to carry out duties within our jurisdiction and will collaborate with other departments within the PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police) and also other security agencies, such as the Malaysian Armed Forces,” he said during a media conference on Op Gali Mega today.
Yusri added that JKDNKA, through the GOF, the Marine Police, and the Federal Reserve Unit, will continue to strengthen operations in areas identified as high-risk, especially in Kelantan, as the three southern Thai provinces of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat share borders with the state.
“We will continue to improve the deployment, as well as increase manpower, intelligence personnel, and assets in areas where we know there will be incursions or smuggling activities,” he said.
Commenting on the Thai authorities’ request for assistance in tracking the movements of individuals or agents linked to the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) group, Yusri said it involved information sharing between Malaysian and Thai authorities and that JKDNKA would pass on any information it obtained to the relevant department.
Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail said PDRM received a request from the Thai police and military to help trace individuals linked to BRN following several explosions in three southern provinces in Thailand.
He said such requests are not new, and the PDRM would continue to assist Thai authorities from time to time.
On Saturday (August 22), a curfew was imposed in Narathiwat province from 10.15pm to 5am after more than 50 incidents, including bombings, arson at local government offices, and tyre burnings, were reported across three southern Thai provinces.
