PASIR MAS, Aug 26 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has received a request from the Thai police and military to help trace individuals linked to the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) group following several explosions in three southern provinces in Thailand on Saturday (August 22).
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail said they will investigate, gather intelligence, and assist the Thai authorities.
“So far, we have received requests from Thai police and military to search for or assist with any movement of agents or individuals connected with BRN.
“Therefore, we will carry out investigations, gather further information, and assist the Thai side in resolving this matter,” he said during a media conference after a working visit to the Lubok Gong illegal jetty today.
Khalid added that such requests are not new, as PDRM has received them before and will continue to fulfil requests from Thai authorities as needed.
Developments in Thailand's three southern provinces are being closely monitored, as they could pose security threats to Malaysia.
He said the visit with Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri and Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat demonstrated PDRM’s commitment to national security and public order, especially in Kelantan.
Also present were Southeast Brigade General Operations Force commander SAC Ahmad Radzi Hussain and Pasir Mas police chief ACP Mazlan Hassan.
Khalid noted that border security has been strengthened with additional personnel, drone technology, and advanced equipment to prevent illegal entry.
These measures also aim to curb smuggling of illegal immigrants and goods, which require continued surveillance.
“I see that the actions taken by KDNKA and the Kelantan police chief have been highly effective,” he said.
The IGP also advised Malaysians to be cautious when travelling to the kingdom and to prioritise personal safety.
On Saturday, a curfew was imposed in Narathiwat province from 10.15pm to 5am after more than 50 incidents, including bombings, arson at local government offices, and tyre burnings, were reported across three southern Thai provinces.
A powerful explosion in Narathiwat on the night of the incident also shook homes and alarmed residents along the Malaysia-Thailand border, including Kampung Lubok Gong and Kampung Tersang in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan.
