SHAH ALAM, Aug 26 — The state government has activated the National Haze Action Plan through the Environment Department (DOE) following deteriorating air quality in several areas across the state.
State executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said that they view the cross-border haze situation seriously after several locations along the west coast, including Johan Setia, Banting, Klang, and Shah Alam, recorded unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings.
“Selangor residents are advised to minimise outdoor movement unless necessary for work or school, particularly those experiencing health problems related to the respiratory system,” she said in a statement today.
Jamaliah added that under the action plan, schools statewide have been issued notices on precautionary measures to be taken, particularly those in areas with API readings exceeding 100.
“Schools, kindergartens, and childcare centres must close if the API reaches 200,” she said.
The local authorities have also been instructed to increase monitoring to prevent open burning, especially in residential, commercial, and industrial areas.
“Any party found to be involved in open burning activities will face strict action under Section 29(A) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.
“If convicted, they may be fined not less than RM25,000 and not more than RM1 million, or imprisoned for a term not exceeding five years, or both. They may also be liable to an additional fine of up to RM5,000 for each day the offence continues after a notice has been served,” said Jamaliah.
The councillor noted that the haze could pose health risks, particularly to children, senior citizens, pregnant women, and those with heart or respiratory conditions.
As such, she advised these groups to reduce exposure to haze by staying indoors and limiting strenuous outdoor activities, and if necessary to be outdoors, to always cover their nose and mouth.
Meanwhile, Selangor State Secretary Dato' Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin will chair the State Disaster Management Committee meeting tomorrow to discuss additional measures to reduce the impact of haze on residents, based on updated weather forecasts and data.
