KUALA LANGAT, Aug 24 — Police seized 805 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth RM304,800 during a raid on a workshop in Kampung Sungai Rambai, Jenjarom, on Friday.
General Operations Force (GOF) 4th Battalion commander Amanjit Singh said the raid was conducted under Ops Taring Alpha 1 in Semenyih alongside the Kuala Langat Criminal Investigation Division, The Star reported.
During the raid, police seized cigarettes of various brands believed to be untaxed, as well as a mobile phone.
Amanjit said the raid also revealed that the autoshop was being used as a storage facility for illegal smokes, which were hidden in a rented workers’ dorm in the compound.
“To avoid detection by the authorities, the syndicate used an external courier to make deliveries,” he said.
Amanjit also said the cigarettes were believed to be bound for foreigner-owned retail shops in Jenjarom, and that the investigation revealed the syndicate had been operating locally for about four months.
The workshop caretaker, a local man, was also arrested during the raid for arranging deliveries according to instructions from his boss.
“Based on our records, members of the same syndicate were previously arrested by the 4th Battalion GOF in Bukit Raja in March,” Amanjit said.
The suspect, along with the items seized, were handed over to the Kuala Langat district police headquarters for investigation under the Customs Act 1967.
