SHAH ALAM, Aug 21 — Wushu delivered the first medal for the Selangor contingent during the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), with young athlete Tan Yu Zhe winning bronze in the Nandao + Nangun discipline at the IDEAL Convention Centre (IDCC) today.
Making his SUKMA debut, the 15-year-old produced consistent performances in both disciplines to accumulate an overall score of 9.545 points.
The athlete scored 9.523 points in Nangun and 9.566 points in Nandao, finishing fourth, ahead of the Sarawak representative. Penang won gold, while Perak took silver.
Tan described the achievement as particularly meaningful, saying he had not expected to reach the podium in his first appearance at the Games.
“I am happy with this achievement, and I would like to thank my coach and the Selangor contingent for helping me win this bronze medal,” he told Media Selangor.
Tan's teammates warmly celebrated his achievement, congratulating him immediately after the medal presentation ceremony.
The scene reflected the strong camaraderie and harmony among members of the Selangor wushu team, who continue to support one another.
Tan's bronze medal also opened the medal account for the Selangor wushu team at SUKMA 2026, further motivating the other athletes to continue their respective campaigns.
Meanwhile, making her debut at SUKMA 2026 has been a valuable experience for fellow wushu athlete Teh Shuen Ru, as she continues to develop as a young athlete.
Competing at the age of 15 in the Taijijian discipline, Teh finished 16th out of 19 competitors with a score of 9.066 points at the IDCC.
Although she did not finish among the top competitors, Teh considers her participation a valuable opportunity to gain experience and improve her performance at future competitions.
She said that competing alongside the country's best athletes at SUKMA has also motivated her to raise her performance level.
“Competing for the first time, I was a little nervous and hope to gain more experience at high-level competitions such as this.
“I am proud to compete against some of the best wushu athletes because it will help me raise my performance to a higher level,” Teh told Media Selangor.
The young athlete is also receiving guidance from national wushu legend Sydney Chin Sy Xuan, who described her protégé's appearance as a positive start to her career.
She is generally satisfied with Teh's performance, particularly her ability to apply higher-level taichi techniques.
“Overall, I am satisfied because she used more advanced taichi techniques. Her nervousness caused her to make a few mistakes in some of the movements, but she still made me proud,” Chin said.
Teh is scheduled to continue her campaign in the Taijiquan discipline on Sunday (August 23) and hopes to improve her performance and contribute more to herself and the Selangor contingent.
