SERDANG, Aug 17 — The state athletics team have an opportunity to add to their medal tally during the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), with five finals taking centre stage at Stadium Universiti Putra Malaysia today.
Two runners, M. Kabeenesh and Muhammad Daniel Haqiem, will go head-to-head in the men’s 400-metre final, while the men’s and women’s quartets will compete for medals in the 4x100-metre events.
Kabeenesh topped the first 400m semi-final with a time of 48.800 seconds, while Daniel was faster in the second semi-final, clocking 48.150 seconds to set a new personal best.
In the men’s 4x100m event, the Selangor quartet secured a place in the final after putting in a convincing run in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, the women’s quartet qualified automatically for the final and are now among Selangor’s hopes of adding to the medal tally on the second day.
Two more medals could potentially be won in the men’s and women’s 3,000m steeplechase events, involving four athletes.
Elsewhere, the Selangor athletics team failed to win medals in the three finals held this morning: the men’s 10,000m race walk, the men’s javelin throw, and the men’s high jump.
Earlier, Selangor opened its athletics campaign with one gold and two silver medals on the first day.
The gold was won by Sasha Alyssa Philip in the women’s discus throw, while Syafiqah Mohd Azrul Ikram and Lim Mei Yin each won silver in the women’s pole vault and 100m respectively.
The state athletics team now hopes the remaining finals on the second day will deliver additional medals as they seek to help the Selangor contingent achieve their goal of becoming overall champions at SUKMA 2026.
