SUKMA 2026: Selangor overcome Kedah to reach quarter-finals as group champions

PETALING JAYA, Aug 17 — Selangor confirmed its place in the football quarter-finals of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) after defeating Kedah 2-1 at Stadium MBPJ last night

The second consecutive victory strengthened the state team's position as Group C champions with six points, securing their place in the next round.

Selangor, which made a strong start to the tournament by defeating the Federal Territories in their opening match, dominated the first half and took the lead through Muhammad Danish Iskandar Marzizul in the 30th minute.

Eight minutes later, it wasted no time in capitalising on another opportunity, with Muhammad Aiman Yusuf Muhammad Nabil scoring the second goal in the 38th minute.

Kedah attempted to fight back in the second half and were rewarded in the 68th minute when striker Shahmeer Rusli produced a lobbed effort that beat Selangor goalkeeper Muhammad Farish Farhan.

The score remained unchanged until the final whistle as Selangor maintained its winning record.

State coach Arulchelvan Illenggo praised his players’ performance after they completed their initial mission of qualifying for the knockout stage.

“I can say that tonight was a good performance. We made a lot of player rotations because of the packed match schedule, while also preparing for the quarter-finals.

“But everything the players did today went according to plan, and everything worked well,” he told Media Selangor.

Selangor will now await the Group D runners-up in the quarter-final, scheduled to be played at Stadium MBPJ tomorrow.
