SHAH ALAM, Aug 14 — The state contingent continued its positive momentum at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), adding to its medal tally through judo, taekwondo, and rhythmic gymnastics, while recording several victories and advancing in other events today.
Selangor’s two gold medals were won by Nur Sufia Arisha Mohamed Rasidi in the women’s under-44kg judo event and Nur Aina Qistina Nor Maznizar in the women’s under-46kg taekwondo event.
The victories take the state tally to four gold and three silver, bringing its overall medal haul to seven so far.
The rhythmic gymnastics team also contributed a team silver, while Selangor representatives in women’s football, beach volleyball, and men’s water polo advanced to the semi-finals, and the men’s kabaddi team opened its campaign with a victory.
Nur Sufia, Nur Aina deliver gold
Sufia won gold after defeating Terengganu's Nur Fasha Zazali in the women’s under-44kg final at the Ideal Convention Centre in Shah Alam.
She recorded one Ippon, one Waza-ari, and two Yuko to overcome her opponent in a bout lasting two minutes and 58 seconds.
Meanwhile, Aina delivered taekwondo gold after defeating Negeri Sembilan's Marieam Adlydelisha Afea Mohamad Adam 2-0 in the women’s under-46kg final at the same venue.
Rhythmic gymnastics contributes silver
Selangor’s rhythmic gymnastics team won silver in the team event through Yoong Bei Ru, Sam Lee Li Momoka, Ker Jia Wei, and Chew Huan Xuan, who accumulated 214.350 points.
The score placed Selangor second behind the Federal Territories, which won gold.
Women’s football reaches semi-finals
The state women’s football team confirmed their place in the semi-finals as Group A champions after defeating Sabah 2-1 at Stadium Selayang last night.
Tegen Su-Yin Butler and Eusvewana Kadius scored for Selangor, which will face the Group B runners-up in the semi-final at Stadium Selayang on Monday (August 17).
Beach volleyball secures semi-final spots
Selangor also secured representation in the men’s and women’s beach volleyball semi-finals following all-Selangor clashes in the quarter-finals.
Selangor B defeated Selangor A 21-16, 21-12 in the men’s event, while Selangor A overcame Selangor B 21-10, 21-19 in the women’s event to continue their campaigns.
Men’s water polo reach semi-finals, women suffer narrow defeat
The state men’s water polo team finished as Group B champions with a perfect winning record after thrashing Sabah 54-8 at Akuatik Selangor, and are expected to face Negeri Sembilan in the semi-finals.
It was a different outcome for the women’s team, who suffered a narrow 9-10 defeat to Sarawak despite attempting to fight back in the fourth quarter.
Kabaddi opens campaign with victory
The Selangor men’s kabaddi team made a winning start to their Group B campaign after defeating Kedah 41-18 at Stadium MBSJ in Serdang Jaya.
They will continue their group campaign against Terengganu at the same venue tomorrow.
MTB miss out on medals
The state contingent failed to secure a medal in mountain biking (MTB) at Denai Peladang Agro Park, Bandar Saujana Utama, Sungai Buloh, with Lim Joe Hwa finishing seventh in the men’s downhill category in 2 minutes 9.143 seconds.
Fellow Selangor athlete Daniel Tai Zu Hui finished 14th in 2 minutes 16.070 seconds, while gold went to Negeri Sembilan athlete Zane Aydeen Mohd Faizal, who clocked one minute 58.146 seconds.
30,000 expected at SUKMA opening ceremony
Meanwhile, around 30,000 visitors are expected to attend the 2026 SUKMA opening ceremony at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam tomorrow night, which is spearheaded by Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation) or MBI.
Themed 'Di Sinilah Lahirnya Juara', the ceremony will feature a parade of 15 contingents, including Brunei, a flag-raising ceremony and the recitation of the athletes’ oath, as well as the lighting of the SUKMA cauldron, which is expected to involve an athlete regarded as one of the most successful in the history of SUKMA Selangor.
