SUKMA 2026: State women’s water polo team strives to bounce back after narrow loss

SHAH ALAM, Aug 14 — Luck was not on Selangor’s side as the women’s water polo team suffered a narrow 9-10 defeat to Sarawak during the 22nd SUKMA at Akuatik Selangor today.

Despite launching an all-out attack in the fourth quarter, they were unable to find the equaliser and had to settle for the narrow defeat.

Team coach Sarah Ann Thorp said her players had given their best and put in a good performance, particularly when chasing an equaliser.

“The players played well, except that the result did not go our way. We lost by just one goal, but every player gave their best.

“I remain proud of my players, despite the result of this match,” she told Media Selangor shortly after the match ended.

Meanwhile, team captain Lim Syn Roo said she and her teammates had given everything in their effort to defeat Sarawak, but luck had not been on their side.

“I think we played well both as a team and individually. We will improve our game for the next match.

"We will do our best to reach the final and win the gold medal,” she said.

However, the defeat should not dampen Selangor’s spirits as the match was played at the group stage.

Thorp’s charges must now put the defeat behind them, bounce back and produce their best performance in the next match to keep their hopes of reaching the final and winning gold in the women’s water polo event alive.
