SHAH ALAM, Aug 13 — Selangor’s local councils are required to develop their own climate action plans to identify risks and determine mitigating and adaptive measures, said state executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin.
She added that the requirement is outlined under the 10th strategic thrust of the Selangor Climate Change Policy, which was launched on November 25, 2024.
“Each local council will have its own climate action plan.
“This will allow each local council to identify its local risk profile… as well as the appropriate mitigating and adaptive measures,” she said during the question-and-answer session at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today, adding that the cost to prepare the climate action plans would be borne by each local council.
Jamaliah said the state is also preparing a disaster management strategy that would consider extreme weather and climate-related hazards and strengthen monitoring and early warning systems to lower their impact on residents and property.
She explained that the Selangor Climate Adaptation Centre (SCAC) is conducting a climate vulnerability, risk and adaptation assessment, which would inform Selangor’s climate-adaptive framework that would be introduced as a key performance indicator (KPI) under the Selangor Second Plan (RS-2).
“Based on the findings of the study, the state government will develop Selangor’s (climate) plan, which will outline comprehensive interventions and adaptive measures to boost the state’s resilience and ensure Selangor is better prepared for future climate risks and impacts.”
Jamaliah said the state’s climate policy would be executed by more than 60 entities including federal and state agencies, local authorities, district and land offices, government-linked companies (GLCs), industry players, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and communities.
She also said the Selangor Climate Committee, chaired by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, would monitor climate-related KPIs, policies and strategies through the SCAC and State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN).
Jamaliah explained that climate adaptation won’t be funded by a single source, instead agencies concerned will use their allocations according to their respective responsibilities.
