SHAH ALAM, Aug 4 — A total of 12,626 Tabung Warisan Anak Selangor (TAWAS) recipients haven’t claimed their RM1,500 benefit, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari told the Selangor State Legislative Assembly here today.
He said that as of July 20, only 8,642 people born in 2008 have submitted their claims and received payouts.
TAWAS is a state government initiative under YAWAS that provides financial benefits to Selangor-born residents when they turn 18.
“The government makes an effort to contact them, such as during the Back To School programme with Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (YAWAS) participants to allow the information of recipients who haven’t made claims to be updated.
“The next step is to ramp up announcements and work with community leaders to trace those who haven’t claimed this benefit.
“God willing, by the end of 2026, we will streamline the effort and trace them all over the state with the cooperation of community leaders so no recipient is left out,” he said in response to Sijangkang assemblyman Datuk Ahmad Yunus Hairi during the oral question-and-answer session.
Amirudin said TAWAS benefits can only be claimed when members turn 18, and that recipients must submit required documents for checks before YAWAS approves payouts.
Meanwhile, he added that although TAWAS ended in 2019, Selangor-born children still enjoy the same benefit under new initiatives.
He explained that the Selangor government allocated between RM50 million and RM60 million a year to fulfil its commitment to recipients who registered when the programme was launched in 2008.
“Since TAWAS has ended, we introduced a new programme, Iltizam Anak Selangor (where) the government provides RM500 from when they are born under SSPN (National Education Savings Scheme), where parents can add to the savings.
“With the Selangor Higher Learning Institute Study Gift (RM1,000) if these children pursue tertiary education, plus the minimum RM500 (from SSPN), at age 18 they will receive RM1,500 or more if there are more savings,” Amirudin said.
