SHAH ALAM, Aug 3 — The upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 in Selangor, to be held from August 15 to August 24, is a golden opportunity to showcase the state’s hospitality, unity and openness to the whole country, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
Hosting the country’s biggest multi-sport event after 28 years should be regarded as a shared responsibility among all Selangor citizens rather than solely the government’s.
He also urged state public servants to lend their support as Selangor prepares to welcome an estimated 20,000 athletes, officials, supporters and family members during the Games.
“This is not my programme, nor does it belong solely to the National Sports Council, (state executive councillor for sports, youth, and entrepreneurship) Mohd Najwan (Halimi), or the state government. It is a programme of the state and the people of Selangor.
“We may (welcome) around 13,000 athletes, but when we include supporters, officials, and parents, the number could reach 20,000 people.
“As civil servants and representatives of the state, we must all work together because this is not just about the image of an individual, but the image of our state,” he said during the Selangor Civil Servants assembly and the launch of the state-level ‘Fly the Jalur Gemilang’ campaign today.
Amirudin added that while Selangor takes pride in being Malaysia’s largest contributor to the national economy, he also hoped that it would be remembered as an excellent host.
The state’s success should not only be measured by economic achievements but also by the values it upholds, as true progress must be accompanied by integrity, moral character, and spiritual strength.
Meanwhile, on the launch of the Jalur Gemilang campaign, the Menteri Besar said the national flag symbolises sovereignty, confidence, and unity.
He urged state residents to fly it with pride as the nation celebrates its 69th Independence Day on August 31.
“The flag is a symbol of sovereignty. Sovereignty gives birth to confidence, and confidence enables us to compete fairly and become a competitive society,” he said.
