SHAH ALAM, Aug 26 — The Jalur Gemilang is more than a symbol of independence, but a national emblem that belongs to and unites all Malaysians, said Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.
In a statement issued by Istana Alam Shah following the raising of the national flag at Dataran Selangor today, the state ruler reminded that the Jalur Gemilang belongs to all Malaysians, regardless of background.
“Although we differ in race, religion, language, political views and backgrounds, the Jalur Gemilang reminds us that we are still citizens of the same country. This flag belongs to all of us. We should be proud because it is a symbol of national unity.”
Earlier, the Sultan consented to the flying of the Jalur Gemilang at the 120-metre tall flagpole at Dataran Selangor from August 26 to September 17, in conjunction with the National Day celebrations.
A ceremony to raise the Jalur Gemilang was held today as a symbol of love for the country and to foster patriotism and unity among the people.
Sultan Sharafuddin reminded Malaysians that the spirit of National Day should be reflected by remembering and appreciating the contributions of those who spent their lives bringing communities together and bridging differences.
His Royal Highness also stressed the importance of educating younger generations to respect people of different religions, races and cultures.
“Leaders and politicians, meanwhile, should set an example by practising moderation, tolerance and compassion, and should not use political, racial or religious differences as an excuse to divide the people.
"Flying thousands of Jalur Gemilang throughout the month of Independence is easy, but the greater challenge is to build a Malaysia where people of every race, religion and background genuinely feel respected, accepted and proud to be Malaysians.”
The Sultan also reminded Malaysians that the Jalur Gemilang represents all without distinction, regardless of ethnicity or faith.
“Independence is not merely to be celebrated and the flag is not merely to be flown. The true value of both lies in our collective ability to safeguard a country where its people can live together peacefully, respect one another and remain united.”
