CYBERJAYA, July 31 — The Selangor Information Technology & Digital Economy Corporation (SIDEC) hopes the upcoming Second Selangor Plan (RS-2) will strengthen the participation of Malaysian companies in the growing autonomous transport industry, especially in integrated circuit (IC) chip design, system integration, and mapping software.
Its chief executive officer Yong Kai Ping said they have shared recommendations with the state government, focusing on positioning local companies to benefit from emerging opportunities as major transport infrastructure projects, including the East Coast Rail Link, reshape the state’s logistics landscape.
“Our focus point will be with transport. The state’s mission is coming out obviously with the ECRL and the rest,” he told the media after the launch of Malaysia's first Autonomous Vehicle Remote Operations Centre at Coplace 9, Cyberview, today.
Yong added that SIDEC wants RS-2 to encourage greater local participation in key segments of the autonomous technology value chain.
Another emerging area with significant growth potential is mapping software, including indoor mapping technologies, which are essential for improving the accuracy of autonomous systems.
“What we want to promote is that the local company will be able to participate in terms of IC chip design, second, the system integration.
“The third one will be a new industry we are going to see are mapping software, internal building mapping, and stuff like that. It will give us much more accuracy,” he said.
Yong noted that Southeast Asia presents unique opportunities for Malaysian companies to develop localised autonomous technologies due to the region’s operating conditions, and that the country is well placed to serve markets with similar characteristics.
“Because of this localisation, they need to do in Southeast Asia; right-hand drive, right-hand incline, and also to differentiate between the way we drive.
“We are representing one-third of the world that are on right-hand drive, the humid weather, and stuff like that. So there are a lot of opportunities,” he said.
These priorities form the key proposals SIDEC has put forward for inclusion in RS-2.
“This is what SIDEC is going to put forward in RS-2, how do we participate in terms of the rise of the transport industry in the state,” Yong said.
