SHAH ALAM, July 26 — Seven hundred rhizophora apiculata saplings were planted on Pantai Kelanang in Kuala Langat yesterday for World Mangrove Ecosystem Conservation Day this year, said the Kuala Langat Municipal Council (MPKL).
It said the effort brings the number of mangrove trees at the beach to 12,000, with an aim by the Malaysia International Cultural Exchange (MICE) Club to plant 30,000 mangroves in the area by 2030.
In a Facebook post yesterday, MPKL said the initiative is part of a continued effort to conserve mangrove ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and raise awareness about the importance of preserving the environment.
“This effort to plant mangroves not only reduces coastal erosion and protects marine habitats, but (constructs) a natural barrier against climate change and improves the coastal ecosystemic balance,” it added.
Also present at the planting session was National Unity Ministry secretary-general Datuk Haslina Abdul Hamid and volunteers and representatives from government agencies, strategic partners, non-governmental organisations, and local communities.
