SHAH ALAM, July 22 — The second phase of the Ambulans Kita Selangor (AKS) programme, launched on July 15, has helped low-income groups save thousands of ringgit on non-emergency ambulance services.
St John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) Selangor operations chief Ng Chee Kai said the programme handled 374 cases involving 103 beneficiaries between its launch in November last year and June 2026, including patients who used the service repeatedly.
“Some of them make bookings every week and there are patients who have used the service more than 10 times,” he said.
According to him, the service focuses on non-emergency cases involving elderly persons with disabilities, bedridden patients and those requiring oxygen support to attend routine check-ups, follow-up treatments or procedures such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans at hospitals.
He said only Selangor residents with a monthly household income of not more than RM5,000 are eligible to apply. Applications must be submitted to the nearest state assemblyman’s community service centre for verification before the ambulance unit contacts the applicant.
“Since November, we have been using this procedure and so far there have been no issues. Once the community service centre verifies the documents, the information will be sent to the ambulance unit, which will contact the applicant to confirm the transport schedule,” he explained.
Ng said the number of ambulances deployed depends on the needs of each area, with up to two units assigned in urban areas and at least one ambulance operating in rural locations.
“Our service coverage is extensive, including trips from Selangor to Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and even hospitals in Perak and Negeri Sembilan. Eligible Selangor residents can apply for transport to government hospitals on the approved list,” he said.
He added that ambulance service fees typically start at around RM100 and can run into thousands of ringgit depending on the distance travelled.
“For journeys from northern Selangor to the south, the cost can reach thousands of ringgit. We have transported patients from Kuala Selangor to hospitals in Kuala Lumpur. The service greatly eases their burden and helps reduce the financial strain on those in need,” he said.
Ng stressed that only Selangor residents are eligible for AKS benefits, while applications from border areas will be considered at the discretion of the respective state assemblyman’s community service centre.
