SHAH ALAM, Dec 4 — In medical emergencies, getting to the hospital in time is the decider between life and death. For low-income groups (B40), this used to be a costly, out-of-reach option, but Ambulans Kita Selangor is bridging the gap.
In the 2025 Selangor Budget, RM1 million was allocated to provide a free ambulance service to transport B40 patients to and from hospitals in 26 state constituencies.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said many families would have to fork out as much as RM250 to RM600 per ambulance trip, but this service would save them a lot of money and is highly convenient.
48 ambulances on standby all year
Last month, the state government launched the scheme in Petaling, Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor, involving five local authorities, with 48 ambulances in operation throughout the year.
These vehicles are handled by the Selangor branch of St John Ambulance of Malaysia (SJAM) to ensure a professional, safe and timely service.
Patients who earn a monthly income of less than RM5,000, require oxygen throughout the journey, or bedridden patients with limited mobility would all benefit from Ambulans Kita Selangor. The free service covers both one-way journeys and round trips between home and hospital.
Amirudin said Ambulans Kita Selangor took a year to develop after he announced the initiative at the 2025 state budget tabling, during which the Selangor government worked closely with local authorities and the Health Ministry to ensure a systematic, sustainable service.
“We want to ensure this service is effective and doesn’t burden local authorities or the MOH. The state government will also regularly evaluate the programmes’ effectiveness and make improvements if necessary,” he said.
Residents in need can submit their applications through their respective state assemblyman’s community service centres, which will coordinate with SJAM.
For many families, this programme is not only a transport facility, but also provides peace of mind. It affords dignity to elderly folk who have been long bedridden and patients who find it difficult to travel to and from the hospital, without having to worry about fares.
Ambulans Kita Selangor doesn’t just transport patients; it carries the state’s commitment to equality for the people and concern for their health.
