KUALA LANGAT, JULY 18 – Mangrove tree planting efforts need to continue to be intensified as a natural measure to address climate change and to protect coastal areas from the threat of erosion.
Selangor Department of Environment (DOE) director Dato' Wandi Yadzid Yaakob said mangrove trees have an important role to maintain environmental balance through their ability to absorb carbon, control environmental temperature and preserve biodiversity.
“Comprehensive tree planting efforts must continue because they can improve environmental quality, control environmental temperatures, preserve biodiversity and support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“At the same time, mangrove trees function as natural barriers that protect coastal areas and absorb carbon to reduce the effects of climate change,” he said.

Wandi said this when speaking at the Selangor Level World Environment Day 2026 Celebration at the Mangrove Swamp Recreation Park, Sijangkang, here on Saturday.
He said that unplanned development has the potential to increase the risk of natural disasters.
“The aspects of environmental preservation and conservation need to be given attention along with development progress,” he added.
Wandi said that the Selangor DOE is also intensifying education and awareness programmes to expose the public to the importance of protecting the environment and encouraging the involvement of all parties.
World Environment Day, which is celebrated every June 5, is the main platform of the United Nations (UN) to raise global awareness and encourage action on environmental issues.
This year’s celebration is themed ‘Inspired by Nature. For the Climate. For Our Future’, which emphasises the importance of action together in addressing the impacts of climate change due to human activities.
