SHAH ALAM, July 12 — Mental health support platform SAPOT provides early mental health support to those not yet ready to consult professionals, and aims to narrow the gap between the people and formal mental health systems, said cofounder Nureen Hamka.
She added that the platform, which was established in 2022, is a safe, judgment-free zone for people to share about their experiences and receive emotional support.
She also said those who had past struggles with psychological challenges are empowered to become “SAPOT Warriors” to guide others who need help before being referred to experts.
“Our main role is to be a supportive space before one (seeks) more formal professional treatment.
“Our SAPOT Warriors are trained to share their own life experiences and guide individuals who need support, but don’t replace the role of psychologists or psychiatrists,” she said when contacted by Media Selangor.
Nureen added that the community-based approach rounds out existing mental health services by connecting accredited care providers to the wider community, which heightens access for people who need support before things worsen.
She said though reception to SAPOT was poor in 2022 due to its new concept and stigma against mental health, the platform has benefited 2,828 users with the support of 68 SAPOT Warriors.
Nureen explained that SAPOT runs as a social enterprise, not a non-governmental organisation, which allows more people to receive support in a safe, stigma-free environment.
