SHAH ALAM, July 2 — Selangor’s impressive economic performance last year could not have been achieved if not for the First Selangor Plan (RS-1), said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said that throughout the RS-1 period from 2021 to 2025, Selangor saw its economy grow by 33.94 per cent from RM343.5 billion to RM460.1 billion.
He also credited Selangoreans for helping drive the economy.
“Such strong economic performance would not have been possible without the restructuring of the state’s economy through RS-1, the state’s five-year socio-economic development blueprint.
“This achievement was not driven solely by policymaking in Shah Alam, but also by the determination of all Selangor citizens … (including) hawkers who started food and beverage businesses through programmes like PLATS, workers employed after participating in Jobcare, engineers developing designs at the IC Design Park, technicians working in the electrical and electronics manufacturing industry, and companies investing in the state’s manufacturing sector,” he said in a statement today.
This follows the Statistics Department’s (DOSM) latest GDP report, which revealed that Selangor remained Malaysia’s largest economic driver, having contributed RM460.1 billion to the national economy in 2025, equivalent to 26.5 per cent of the nation’s overall economic activity.
In 2024, Selangor contributed RM432.1 billion to the national GDP, or 26.2 per cent of the total.
Amirudin said despite the achievement, Selangor cannot afford to be complacent and must keep its sights on becoming the first Malaysian state to record an economic value of RM500 billion.
“To achieve this, all quarters must work together to increase productivity,” he added.
He asserted that the state administration will prioritise cost of living and quality of life issues to ensure continued progress translates into tangible benefits for the people.
“I would also like to express my appreciation to civil servants who have diligently performed their duties, industries that have invested in Selangor, and, above all, the people of Selangor for their commitment and contributions to the state’s economic success,” Amirudin said.
