SHAH ALAM, July 1 — The Safe Internet Campaign, aimed at improving digital literacy, has been implemented in more than 900 schools across Selangor, reaching nearly 53,000 students and teachers as of May.

Selangor Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) director Amal Abdul Aziz said the campaign is tailored to different education levels to raise awareness of online safety.

"Primary school pupils are introduced to social media, including identifying age-appropriate platforms and understanding the risks of the digital environment.

"Secondary school students, meanwhile, are taught to use the internet safely and responsibly as a learning tool," he said.

Amal said this during the recent Bicara Semasa programme titled ‘Safe Internet Campaign: Towards a Safer Digital Ecosystem’, produced by Media Selangor.

He added that MCMC will expand the campaign across Selangor through the organisation of Safe Internet Community Carnivals over the coming months.

According to Amal, the programme involves collaboration with various agencies to engage communities, including parents and senior citizens, while raising awareness of online scams, the latest cybercrime trends and preventive measures.

"I would like to invite all Selangor residents to take part in this programme to enhance their knowledge of cyber safety and stay informed about the latest cyber threats so they do not fall victim to scams," he said.

The Safe Internet Campaign was launched in early 2025 as part of the government's ongoing efforts to raise awareness and promote the safe, ethical and responsible use of the internet.

PSKMM Selangor’ director Amal Abdul Aziz says the programme is tailored to different ages so that school children will easily understand.

Meanwhile, Amal said Selangor continued to record the highest internet usage in Malaysia, with 1.57 million fixed broadband subscriptions and 9.51 million mobile broadband subscriptions as of the fourth quarter of 2025.

The state also recorded the country's highest fixed broadband penetration rate at 64.1 subscriptions for every 100 premises.

Amal said the figures underscored the need to further strengthen the ‘Safe Internet’ culture so that the public becomes more digitally literate, remains vigilant against cyber threats and is less susceptible to online crime.
