MAIS orders urgent meeting over delayed burial allegations

SHAH ALAM, June 29 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) has directed an immediate meeting involving all relevant parties to seek the best possible solution following allegations of delays in burial arrangements at the Ukay Perdana Muslim Cemetery in Hulu Kelang.

Its chairman, Dato' Setia Salehuddin Saidin, said the meeting will involve representatives from MAIS, the affected family, the management of Masjid Nurul Hidayah Kampung Pandan Dalam, Badan Kebajikan Salatulrahim (BKS) and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) as part of the council's commitment to resolving the issue.

"MAIS extends its condolences to the family affected by the alleged delay in the burial at the Ukay Perdana Muslim Cemetery in Hulu Kelang and expresses its deep regret over the incident during their time of bereavement," he said in a statement today.

Salehuddin said MAIS had also taken note of JAIS' media statement dated June 27 on the preliminary findings based on information provided by the management of Masjid Nurul Hidayah Kampung Pandan Dalam.

He added that the mosque's management, the affected family and BKS had also lodged police reports over the incident.

In light of this, MAIS urged all parties to allow the police to conduct a transparent and fair investigation.

"Appropriate action will be taken against any party found responsible based on the findings of the police investigation, whether the incident involved criminal elements, negligence or miscommunication between the parties.

"This is to ensure a similar incident does not recur in the future," he said.

Meanwhile, Salehuddin said MAIS would also review the management of Muslim funeral services carried out by mosque management committees to identify areas for improvement.

"This is to ensure Muslim funeral management is carried out responsibly and with integrity, in an orderly and efficient manner, while complying with Islamic law," he said.

He also urged the Muslim community to continue strengthening unity and not allow differences of opinion to become a source of division or hostility.

Earlier, allegations went viral on social media claiming a dispute over funeral arrangements had delayed a burial at the Ukay Perdana Muslim Cemetery by more than an hour.

According to the post, a welfare organisation claimed it had managed the funeral at the request of the deceased's family, but issues arose over the burial permit and allegations that the mosque management imposed a RM1,400 charge.

The post also alleged that the burial only proceeded after representatives of the mosque management arrived at the cemetery.
