SHAH ALAM, June 27 — As many as 1,400 traders renting premises from the Sabak Bernam District Council (MDSB) are set to receive a 30 per cent rent discount per month for six months under Phase 2 of the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package (SREP).
MDSB said that the initiative involves a commitment of RM60,000 per month, for a total of RM360,000 from July to December.
“The amount is borne by MDSB from the monthly collection of premises rental, which is estimated at RM200,000, with the council also formulating several steps to ensure the decreased revenue can be balanced out.
“This rent cut is hoped to bring traders some relief, especially as they face rising operational costs and current economic challenges,” it said in a statement.
To ensure its stable fiscal position, MDSB will take several steps including by ramping up the collection of outstanding revenue, exploring new revenue sources, and strengthening expenditure controls.
According to MDSB, this approach would allow aid to traders to continue without compromising the council’s ability to serve the people.
Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced a 30 per cent rent discount on lots under local authorities’ jurisdiction from July to December.
He said the initiative under SREP Phase 2 aims to help traders face the global energy and supply crises, and would benefit 21,234 premise renters statewide.
The state government has allocated RM4.5 million for the rent discount, which will be automatically channelled without traders having to submit any kind of application.
Amirudin announced SREP Phase 2 at a special Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting on June 19, aimed at helping the people and businesses face rising costs due to supply chain disruptions and energy market uncertainties.
