Johor election kicks off with nominations today

JOHOR BAHRU, June 27 — Nominations for the 16th Johor election concluded at 10am today with the closure of all 56 nomination centres statewide.

The one-hour window for the submission of nomination papers started at 9am, with returning officers announcing the closure at their respective centres.

Attention now turns to the official list of eligible candidates and how many candidates are contesting each seat.

With nominations done, the 14-day campaign period begins and runs until 11.59pm on July 10.

Early voting is on July 7, while July 11 is polling day.

A total of 2,727,926 voters are eligible to vote, comprising 2,703,175 ordinary voters, 12,041 military personnel and their spouses, and 12,710 police personnel and their spouses.

The contest is expected to intensify with a mix of new faces, incumbents and returning former elected representatives fielded by their respective parties across all 56 state seats.

Pakatan Harapan is contesting all seats, comprising candidates from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (20), Amanah (19), and DAP (17).

Barisan Nasional (BN) is also fielding candidates in all constituencies through UMNO (36), MCA (16) and MIC (4).

Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional (PN) will contest through PAS in 11 seats, Bersatu in 16, Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP) in five, and Parti Pejuang Tanah Air in one.

The election will also see MUDA contesting four seats, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) with one candidate, and the debut of Parti Bersama Malaysia, which is expected to contest 15 seats.

Before the dissolution of the Johor State Legislative Assembly on June 1, BN held 40 seats, Harapan held 12, PN held 3, and MUDA held one.
