Harapan to review Johor outcome ahead of Negri Sembilan polls

SHAH ALAM, July 11 — The Johor election outcome will serve as a benchmark for Pakatan Harapan (Harapan) as the coalition looks to re-strategise ahead of the Negeri Sembilan state polls scheduled in three weeks.

Harapan election machinery director Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the coalition would undertake a detailed analysis of voting trends and factors that shaped the Johor results.

He said Harapan would also assess campaign weaknesses, study issues raised by voters and realign its strategy to strengthen its preparations for future elections.

“Our expectation is to retain the Harapan administration (in Negeri Sembilan).

“We have a good track record in Negeri Sembilan and we are confident that Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun can lead and continue our efforts and capabilities in the state,” he said in a press conference in Johor Bahru today.

Earlier, unofficial results showed that Barisan Nasional (BN) had secured enough seats to retain the state government in Johor, while Harapan had secured eight of the 56 constituencies.

Amirudin, who is Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Keadilan) vice-president, said his party would discuss the Negeri Sembilan candidates tomorrow.

“If I am not mistaken, we will announce the full list of Harapan candidates on July 14,” he said.

Amirudin said Harapan would also analyse results from each polling stream and locality to identify shifts in voter support.

However, he said it was still too early to draw conclusions on the factors behind the Johor election defeat.

The Election Commission (EC) has set July 18 for nomination day and August 1 as polling day for the Negeri Sembilan state election.

In the last state polls in 2023, Harapan won 17 of the 36 seats, while BN secured 14 seats and Perikatan Nasional (PN) five.
