Johor polls: BN retains state with simple majority

JOHOR BAHRU, July 11 — Barisan Nasional (BN) has secured a fresh mandate to lead the Johor state government again after obtaining a simple majority in the 16th Johor State Election today.

In a press conference, Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan said the coalition has won 29 out of 56  seats as of 10.32 pm.

"Meanwhile, Pakatan Harapan (PH) has won two seats,” he said in a media conference here tonight.

At least 29 seats are needed for a simple majority to form the Johor state government.

Ramlan also said that other parties, including Perikatan Nasional (PN), Parti Bersama Malaysia, Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA), Parti Orang Asli Malaysia, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) as well as independent candidates have yet to win any seat.

BN fielded candidates in all 56 constituencies to seek the people's mandate for the next five years.

Polling for the state election was held from 8am to 6pm.
