SHAH ALAM, June 26 — Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj’s younger sister, Tengku Puteri Arafiah, has died aged 72 due to age-related illness.

She was laid to rest at the Royal Mausoleum here today.

The late Tengku Puteri Arafiah’s funeral rites were conducted according to Royal customs at around 3.30pm, with Sultan Sharafuddin, Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah, and other members of the Royal family in attendance.

Also present were Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari’s wife Datin Seri Masdiana Muhamad, and Selangor Mufti Dato’ Anhar Opir.

Tengku Puteri Arafiah’s remains were taken to the Royal Mausoleum here after rites at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, led by Grand Imam Datuk Muhammad Farhan Wijaya after Friday prayers. 

Sultan Sharafuddin and Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin sprinkled rose water on the grave after a talkin reading led by Selangor Deputy Mufti Datuk Miszairi Sitiris.

Tengku Puteri Arafiah, who was Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah’s fifth child, died at 10.15am today at her home in Section 12 here.

She leaves behind her husband Datuk Seri Abdul Munit Kasmin, two children, and 10 grandchildren.

In her lifetime, she established Rumah Puteri Arafiah, a shelter, rehabilitation and guidance centre for teenage girls with social, abandonment or abuse problems. The centre is backed by the Selangor Women’s Welfare and Charity Organisation (Pekawanis) and the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS).
