LEMBAH BERINGIN, June 25 — Selangor will scale back Malaysian Games (SUKMA) 2026 ceremonial events to manage costs without compromising prestige, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
“We will reduce some (ceremonial) events. We will focus on sports activities in every locality and every venue to draw spectators and supporters,” he told reporters after a topping-off ceremony at the Chery Smart Auto Industrial Park here today.
Cost-saving measures were activated following Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj’s decree for SUKMA 2026 to proceed in a more prudent manner.
State leaders previously said SUKMA would be organised in line with the ruler’s advice to reduce costs and ensure public funds are spent responsibly without affecting event quality.
Amirudin added that the event would be strengthened via various programmes aimed at attracting spectators, sports enthusiasts, and volunteers.
“Thank God, the state government has decided to mobilise 10,000 registered volunteers.
“Overall, we received 30,000 applications several months ago, and 10,000 of them will be selected to become SUKMA volunteers,” he said.
Selangor will host the 22nd SUKMA from August 15 to 24, with competitions to be held across all nine districts statewide, except for track cycling, which will be held at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.
Para SUKMA will be held from September 5 to 14.
