SHAH ALAM, June 23 — More than 60,000 heads of households in Selangor have successfully moved out of the poor and hardcore poor categories through the implementation of various initiatives under the First Selangor Plan (RS-1), said state executive councillor for human resources and poverty eradication Papparaidu Veraman.
This achievement forms an important foundation for the state’s poverty eradication agenda, which will be further strengthened under the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2), particularly in efforts to increase household incomes and expand social mobility.
To date, 46 programmes under the Iltizam Selangor Penyayang initiative have been implemented throughout the RS-1 period, encompassing entrepreneurship assistance, skills training, and job placement programmes to help those in need build more sustainable sources of income.
“Poverty eradication efforts are not solely focused on providing assistance. They also involve developing individual capabilities so that people can improve their standard of living and generate sustainable incomes.
“The state government also extends its appreciation to Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation) or MBI, which has consistently channelled assistance to the people and supported the implementation of various welfare and community development programmes,” he said.
Papparaidu was speaking as a guest on the 'Teh Tarik Kopi O' segment broadcast by Selangor FM at the State Secretariat Building today.
He added that the successes were also supported by cooperation among various stakeholders, including government agencies, community leaders, and social institutions, to ensure that assistance and programmes reached their intended beneficiaries effectively.

However, the councillor cautioned that poverty should not be regarded as a fully resolved issue, as some families remain at risk of falling back into poverty due to changing economic conditions and other prevailing factors.
As such, continuous monitoring must be carried out through various channels, including community records maintained by mosques, temples, and schools, to identify individuals who require assistance.
Commenting on the direction of RS-2, Papparaidu said the state government will focus on strengthening social mobility, increasing household incomes, developing talent and future-ready skills, and reinforcing social protection networks.
He also urged aid recipients to make full use of the opportunities provided through training, employment, and economic development programmes to improve their quality of life.
“The assistance provided serves as a catalyst for transforming lives. Recipients must also play their part and strive to break free from the cycle of poverty in pursuit of a better future,” Papparaidu said.
Earlier, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said that RS-2, expected to be tabled in the near future, will focus on developing rural areas, including Hulu Selangor and Kuala Selangor.
The five-year development agenda from 2026 to 2030 is intended not only to drive economic growth but also to ensure that the well-being and sustainability of the people’s lives continue to be strengthened.
