SHAH ALAM, June 22 — Recipients of the newly announced Kita Selangor Education Scholarship should be favoured for positions in state agencies and government-linked companies (GLCs) after graduation, said Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki.
She said this would ensure that state-supported students contribute to Selangor’s development.
“This is a win-win situation. We help with their education and they repay that kindness by contributing their excellent efforts to the development of the Selangor economy,” she said when debating Phase 2 of the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package (SREP) at the state assembly today.
When tabling SREP Phase 2 on June 19, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari unveiled the Kita Selangor Education Scholarship to support outstanding students pursuing careers in high-impact fields such as electronics and electrical, life sciences, and artificial intelligence (AI), with an allocation of RM17 million.
Wong also proposed additional support for students from low-income families, including the provision of laptops through constituency service centres.
“The service centres are the front line that often see poor students who go to them crying because they cannot afford a laptop for their studies,” she added.
On a separate note, Wong called on local authorities to inspect government-owned business premises more frequently to ensure they are occupied by legitimate local traders.
She warned against abuses of public assets, including when these premises are misused or sublet for profit.
“We want to ensure these government assets are used by legitimate local traders and not misused as storage spaces or sublet to third parties to turn a profit,” Wong added.
