MELAKA, June 19 — Two people suffered burns while another experienced smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at a two-storey terrace house rented out on a room-by-room basis in Jalan Permai 4, Taman Perkota Hang Tuah, Bukit Baru, early today.
In the incident, which occurred at 3.38 am, a 22-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man sustained burn injuries, while a 26-year-old man experienced breathing difficulties due to smoke inhalation.
Three other occupants — a 44-year-old woman and two men in their 40s — escaped unharmed.
Melaka Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) operations assistant director Deputy Fire Superintendent Mohd Shahrom Laji said the injured victims were found inside the house and received initial treatment from the Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) team at the scene.
“A team from the Ayer Keroh Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by personnel from the Bukit Katil Fire and Rescue Station, was dispatched after receiving an emergency call at 3.38 am.
“Upon arrival at 3.48 am, firefighters found the two-storey permanent structure, measuring approximately 20 by 70 square feet and rented out by room, was about 80 per cent destroyed by the fire,” he said.
Mohd Shahrom said firefighters used first-aid hose lines to battle the blaze, which was brought under control at 3.57 am.
A total of 15 personnel, supported by two Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) vehicles and two EMRS units, were involved in the operation.
He said monitoring operations were continuing to ensure there were no remaining hotspots or risk of the fire reigniting.
The cause of the fire and the total losses incurred are still under investigation.
