Nurul Izzah stays in Keadilan, but chooses to continue struggle beyond party role

MELAKA, Aug 14 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar said she will remain in the party but pursue a different path in her political struggle.

“I have chosen to continue the struggle, not directly through the party, but through the MADANI community.

“For some people, it was unacceptable that I lost in 2022, and for some other people, it was unacceptable that I won in 2025, and for others, it was just unacceptable that I am leaving in 2026.

“You cannot please everyone; you can only remain true to yourself,” she said when opening the 2026 Angkatan Muda Keadilan and Wanita Keadilan National Congress at the Melaka International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh today.

Also present were Keadilan vice-president Dr Zaliha Mustafa and secretary-general Senator Datuk Fuziah Salleh.

Nurul had previously expressed her intention to step down as deputy president, but the Keadilan Central Leadership Council decided not to accept her resignation.

Party information chief Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the decision came after she sought time to attend to personal matters and pursue a Doctor of Philosophy.

Meanwhile, Nurul also warned that divisions within the party’s wings were untenable, urging members to build trust and assume good faith to preserve unity.

“We need to know and trust one another because division within our own party wings is something we cannot afford.

“Perhaps I am naive, perhaps I am simplistic, perhaps I am too hopeful, but we must embrace the spirit of husnuzon (thinking well of one another) as we pursue genuine unity,” she said.

Nurul added that Keadilan could not be strong if there were “a party within a party”, two captains steering one ship, or unseen power structures operating behind formal authority.

“We also cannot be strong as an organisation as long as our energy is consumed by internal disputes.

“Every hour we spend fighting and quarrelling among ourselves is an hour we are not spending winning the hearts of the people,” she said.
