‘I’m sorry, this shouldn’t have happened’ — Squatter flat landowner

SHAH ALAM, June 16 — A landowner whose plot in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau, Hulu Langat, housed an illegal Rohingya settlement, has admitted fault and said he would be responsible for demolition works.

“I’m sorry, I know (it is) wrong, that’s why we’re demolishing it ourselves,” the man in his 70s, who declined to be named, told Harian Metro when met at the site today.

He added that the structures would take three weeks to be torn down, but refused to comment further on the issue and said the demolition is being handled by his children.

The landowner said he co-owns the plot with his wife and assured that the rubble would be disposed of with coordination from local authorities.

The area gained attention recently after a video of the so-called “foreigner flat” went viral on social media.

The settlement was raided by authorities last year and cleared out.
