‘Sg Makau foreigner flat demolition started June 13’

SHAH ALAM, June 16 — Illegal structures built in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau are being demolished in phases, with works having started on June 13, said the Hulu Langat District and Land Office (PDT).

The buildings, including a “foreigner flat” that housed Rohingya refugees last year, were erected on river and road reserves, it said in a statement yesterday.

The office said the 0.18ha site houses multi-storey residential structures and several single-storey units on both private and government land, with the private landowner having started demolition works on June 13.

“The landowner will obtain approval from the local authority to demolish the multi-storey residential building, taking into account technical and safety aspects that must be complied with,” read the statement.

It added that the ceiling cost for demolition and clearing works and the restoration of a riverbank is estimated at RM600,000.

The PDT said these actions were decided upon at a multi-agency coordination meeting on June 10 on the illegally built settlement.

The meeting was chaired by Hulu Langat district officer cum District Safety Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jusni Hashim. Also present were Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan, Dusun Tua assemblyman Datuk Johan Abd Aziz, and representatives of several government agencies.

The meeting covered past enforcement actions and further measures.

Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the illegal settlement in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau, which recently went viral on social media, is not new and has been subject to various enforcement procedures since 2016.

He said the distribution of warnings and compounds and conduct of investigations and raids in the area were done by agencies including Hulu Langat PDT, Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj), Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and Immigration Department.
