SHAH ALAM, June 14 — Selangor is aiming to become the first state in Malaysia to implement an AI City initiative that applies artificial intelligence (AI) technology to urban management and the resolution of various public issues.

State executive councillor for Islamic affairs and innovation Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said the use of AI would help them analyse data more comprehensively to improve service delivery efficiency and management within local authorities.

The technology not only serves as a data collection tool but also helps the government identify more effective solutions and strategic directions for urban management.

“Selangor has been a pioneer in Smart City development since 2018, and we are currently in the process of obtaining recognition as a Smart State.

“Moving forward, in line with the AI City initiative introduced by the Digital Ministry, we intend to become the first state to implement it in Malaysia to help address various urban challenges affecting Selangor,” he said.

Fahmi was speaking after officiating at the closing ceremony of the Generative AI 2026 programme, which involved students from across Selangor, at the Selangor Human Resource Development Centre yesterday.

He added that among the initial areas under consideration is the use of AI in intelligent traffic management systems linking major urban areas, including routes connecting Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya that pass through Selangor.

“That is among the initiatives currently being implemented at the Federal level through the use of an intelligent traffic management system connecting Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya,” Fahmi said.

Beyond traffic management, the technology can also be utilised in environmental data management, such as air quality monitoring, to help identify pollution sources and produce more accurate analyses.

“For example, if we have air quality sensors in every local authority area, the data can be consolidated and analysed using AI to identify pollution patterns and determine the periods with the best air quality throughout the year,” he said.

Fahmi noted that the state government will hold an engagement session involving all local authorities in Selangor early next month to identify services and initiatives suitable for integration with AI technology.

“We will be calling all local authorities together to establish several initiatives and services that can be integrated through the use of AI in Selangor,” he said.

An official announcement on the implementation of the AI City initiative is expected before the end of the year, as part of efforts to position Selangor as a leader in digital transformation and artificial intelligence in Malaysia.

“I will announce this AI City initiative before the end of the year,” Fahmi said.
