SINGAPURA, June 10 — Selangor’s success and development cannot rely solely on investment, but must also be supported by progress across a broad range of sectors, including education and social well-being.

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said that while economic sectors such as semiconductors and integrated circuits remain among the state government’s key priorities, development efforts must be pursued in a more comprehensive manner.

This includes various aspects of governance and public welfare, such as student development, border management, housing administration, and social issues.

“In reality, investment is not limited to companies, industrial expansion and service-based growth opportunities.

“It can extend far beyond economic considerations to encompass areas such as student development, border control, housing management, and social issues,” he told Media Selangor.

Earlier, Amirudin visited the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute as part of his official visit to Singapore under the S R Nathan Fellowship, which began on Monday (June 8) and concluded today.

He added that the island republic's experience and policy approaches could serve as useful references for Selangor’s development efforts, given the similarities between the two jurisdictions in urban development and population density.

“We face many of the same challenges encountered by Singapore during its early stages of development. In addition, both jurisdictions have to address issues associated with urban lifestyles and related challenges,” Amirudin said.

Throughout his visit, the Menteri Besar met several senior leaders of the republic, including Senior Minister cum former prime minister Lee Hsien Loong, Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Education Minister Desmond Lee, and National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat.

He also held engagement sessions with several government agencies and received briefings on economic planning, investment promotion, urban regeneration, and urban planning.

The Fellowship programme was established to promote the exchange of views and the sharing of experiences between foreign leaders, senior officials, and Singapore across a range of strategic fields.
