SHAH ALAM, June 8 — The state government is carefully assessing applications for new housing assistance from Orang Asli communities to ensure that funds under the Rumah Kerajaan Prihatin programme are channelled to those who genuinely qualify.

State executive councillor for human resources, poverty eradication, and Orang Asli affairs Papparaidu Veraman said the number of applications received has been substantial.

However, each application must undergo a thorough evaluation before approval, as the construction cost of a single house is estimated at RM80,000 to RM85,000.

“There are indeed many applications, but the state government must carefully assess each one. We will ensure that only those who genuinely qualify and meet the necessary criteria receive assistance for the construction of a new home.

“With costs ranging from RM80,000 to RM85,000 per house, we must ensure that the allocated funds are utilised as effectively as possible,” he told Media Selangor.

Papparaidu added that the state government has allocated RM1 million to implement the programme, and is also exploring alternative approaches, including repairing dilapidated homes, so that more residents can benefit from assistance.

This approach supports those in need without relying solely on building new houses.

“For homes that remain habitable but are in poor condition, we will explore alternatives to carry out repair works so that occupants can live in a safer and more comfortable environment,” he said.

Earlier, Papparaidu held a meeting with the Orang Asli Affairs Unit's sectoral section assistant director Rahayu Ali and the Orang Asli Communications Unit's head Juli Blat to discuss various issues affecting the community in Selangor.

The discussion focused on implementing the Orang Asli Rumah Kerajaan Prihatin programme, infrastructure development, community welfare, and the Orang Asli's current needs.

Besides housing matters, they also discussed organising community clean-up programmes, installing solar-powered lighting, and improving roads within settlements.

He noted that the state government remains committed to strengthening the development of Orang Asli communities by providing better facilities and infrastructure to improve their living standards and overall well-being.
