PETALING JAYA, June 1 — Art activities are more than just a hobby for senior citizens; they provide an avenue for self-expression and help reduce feelings of isolation from society.
Recognising this need, the Bukit Gasing state constituency organised a Nagomi Pastel Art Workshop specifically for senior citizens at Balairaya MBPJ on May 23.
Its manager Somesvaren Sivanathan said the workshop also helps older adults remain active and engage with the community through art activities that are relaxed, enjoyable, and easy to participate in.
“We wanted to organise an activity that would make them feel as comfortable as they do at home while at the same time encouraging them to step out of their homes,” he told Media Selangor.

The workshop was attended by more than 50 people after Somesvaren first had the idea for the programme, having previously conducted Malaysian Sign Language classes in the constituency.
The cost of organising the workshop was estimated at around RM300, as the materials used had been ordered in advance to ensure the programme could be carried out successfully.
Meanwhile, Bukit Gasing constituency office industrial training staff member Nivee Ranjinath Muniandy said that art can bring people together and encourage social interaction in a relaxed environment.
“Even without specific skills or talent, I believe art can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of age because, ultimately, art itself is enjoyable,” she said.
The psychology graduate also opined that activities such as these should be organised regularly, as they provide opportunities for family members to spend meaningful time with senior citizens.
