RAWANG, May 22 — The expanding network of private hospitals in Selangor is strengthening the state’s medical tourism, with healthcare demand no longer concentrated solely in Penang, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said the rapid growth of private healthcare facilities across Selangor, combined with the state’s connectivity through Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Subang Airport, has made it an increasingly attractive destination for regional medical travellers seeking affordable treatment.
“Previously, medical tourism was heavily focused in Penang.
“However, through Tourism Selangor’s campaigns and the presence of private hospitals across the state, Selangor is now offering a very attractive healthcare ecosystem,” he said in a press conference after the official launch of Selgate Specialist Hospital (SSH) Rawang today.
Amirudin said more patients from neighbouring countries are choosing Selangor as treatment destination due to significantly more affordable costs compared with countries such as Singapore, while confidence in Malaysia’s private healthcare system remains high.
“With access through KLIA and Subang Airport, Selangor can become an entry point for neighbouring countries to obtain healthcare treatment here.”
He added that demand for healthcare services in Selangor continues to rise across both urban and semi-rural areas, including northern parts of the state such as Rawang.
“The demand and occupancy rates for private hospitals remain high, while public hospitals are also seeing heavy patient loads.
“The existence of private hospitals helps fill the gap, and the demand is clearly there.”
Amirudin said the state government would continue strengthening both public and private healthcare infrastructure, including upgrading health clinics and expanding hospital capacity to meet growing needs.
SSH Rawang currently employs about 300 staff, including 120 nurses, and is supported by nearly 30 doctors across more than 20 specialties and sub-specialties.
Selgate plans to expand its hospital network further, with hospitals in Sepang and Shah Alam expected to begin operations in stages by early next year, while additional hospitals in Kuala Selangor and Kuala Langat are targeted for completion before 2030.
