SHAH ALAM, May 22 — The state government continues to empower its education agenda, this time by allocating nearly RM20 million to sponsor tuition for around 4,000 students at three Selangor-owned higher learning institutions (IPTs).
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the allocation goes to students enrolled in Universiti Islam Selangor (UIS), Universiti Selangor (UNISEL), and the Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC), with the Selangor government sponsoring half of their academic fees.

“Only two states have this ability … The first is Sarawak, which fully sponsors (recipients’ tertiary education), we sponsor one half. We are the only state on the peninsula that can do it with such a big cost, almost RM20 million,” he said.
Amirudin was speaking during the launch of the Selangor People’s Tuition Programme (PTRS) and Program Didik Kasih (PDK) at Dewan Raja Muda Musa in Section 7 here today.

According to Amirudin, the sponsorship isn’t meant to just ease families’ burdens, but is a long-term effort by the state government to expand education access to Selangor’s children.
“If this format works, the programme works, God willing, we will be ready to fully sponsor a free education for those who need it, and prove that free education isn’t an impossible dream,” he added.

Amirudin also announced an additional stimulus package, which includes meals for PTRS participants.
“As we cut allocations for other sectors, God willing, (funding for) the education sector will (remain),” he said.
Previously, Amirudin announced a RM136.2 million allocation under the 2026 Selangor Budget for education; the highest amount the state government has ever set aside for the sector, at RM55 million more than the 2025 fund.
