SHAH ALAM, May 22 — The state government is doing its best to minimise the impact of the ongoing West Asia conflict and global economic uncertainty on the people, but the public must also play its part by practising financial discipline and avoiding wasteful spending.

State executive councillor for human resources and poverty eradication Papparaidu Veraman said Selangor has implemented various initiatives focused on food security, supply stability, and assistance for vulnerable groups amid rising global uncertainties.

"RM131 million has been allocated (under the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package) for aid programmes involving essential needs, particularly food supply support for low-income communities.

“We are focusing on very basic necessities such as food security because we do not want shortages or disruptions in supply,” he told Media Selangor after attending the Selangor Small Traders Transformation Assistance Programme’s launching ceremony yesterday.

Papparaidu added that the state government has ensured that food supplies are sufficient for up to six months, while continuing assistance programmes for fishermen, public transportation users, and B40 communities.

Among the initiatives introduced under the package is a RM30 subsidy for public transport users and Jualan Ehsan Rahmah sales programmes offering subsidised essential goods at between 15 and 30 per cent below market prices.

"The government remains committed to ensuring food prices remain under control despite uncertainties caused by international conflicts and unstable economic conditions.

“At the same time, the people must also help by controlling spending, avoiding unnecessary purchases and reducing wasteful habits,” he said.

On a broader level, the councillor noted that the current global crisis has highlighted the need for Malaysia to rethink its long-term energy strategy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Both the COVID-19 pandemic and current geopolitical conflicts provide important lessons on adaptation, preparedness and economic sustainability.

"Countries such as China had prepared much earlier through investments in electric vehicle technology and renewable energy sources such as solar power,” Papparaidu said.
