SHAH ALAM, May 15 — The Selangor government is looking into a recommended desalination plant as an alternative raw water supply for Pulau Indah, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He added that the proposal was presented by Chinese firm Xianda (Tianjin) Seawater Resources Development Co Ltd, which has experience in desalination and supplying treated water.
“This company has vast experience in … supplying clean water in several provinces in China using desalination technology.
“The expertise and technology they bring could be considered as among alternative and supplementary supply sources to the existing water supply system in Selangor,” he said in a Facebook statement.
Amirudin said Pulau Indah will need more water in the future in line with its rapid development, especially in the industrial, logistics, and port sectors.
He added that the exploration of new technology and sustainable water sources is important to ensure the state’s long-term water supply security.
“The state government is always open to studying innovative and sustainable approaches to ensure the people’s and Selangor’s economic development needs are well fulfilled,” said Amirudin.
Previously, state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim said the state government is considering building a desalination plant to diversify long-term water supply sources.
At the April 22 Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting, Izham said the approach is among Selangor’s efforts to ensure sufficient water supply in the future, without sole dependence on surface water sources.
