SHAH ALAM, May 9 — Traders affected by the recent flash flood incident at Medan Selera 223 will receive a two-month rental exemption, the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) announced.
“MBPJ has agreed to grant a rental exemption for the period from May to June to help ease the burden faced by affected traders following the incident," it said in a Facebook post yesterday.
The council said this following a site visit to the popular food court after heavy rainfall flooded the area on Wednesday, submerging several stalls. It is the fourth time in about a month that the food court in Jalan 51A/223 has been inundated.
The visit was led by Petaling Jaya Mayor Dato’ Mohamad Zahri Samingon and attended by representatives from the council’s Technical Department, Zone 14 councillor Asogan Subramaniam, as well as traders and contractors.
MBPJ said as part of preparedness efforts, it would also integrate smart water level sensors with CCTV systems at flood-prone locations to monitor rising river water levels.
“The system will activate early warning sirens to alert traders and members of the public in affected areas during emergencies.”
The council also expressed its appreciation to all parties that provided feedback and cooperation in ensuring more comprehensive solutions can be implemented for the wellbeing of the community
The site visit aimed to identify factors contributing to the flash flood and discuss mitigation measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
